Micah and Sarah’s Epic Maternity Session in Iceland: A Wild Adventure
There’s something undeniably magical about Iceland. The land of fire and ice is a dream destination for many, and when Micah and Sarah agreed to come to Iceland for their maternity shoot I was over the moon! However, let me be the first to tell you—maternity photos in Iceland are both EPIC and utterly ridiculous in the best possible way.
The Start of an Unforgettable Day
Micah and Sarah are the kind of people who exude love and joy wherever they go. Their excitement was contagious as we set out early in the morning for our first location: Skogafoss. If you’ve never stood at the base of this powerful waterfall, let me paint the scene: it’s majestic, roaring, and absolutely soaking. Despite the cold spray coming off the falls, Micah and Sarah were total troopers. The entire time Micah was so focused on making sure Sarah was completely comfortable.
Headed to the Highlands
Can you believe this next location we found on the side of the road? We had plans to go somewhere else, but due to the rain it was not accessible. It ended up being better than I could have ever imagined with the fog rolling in, and six different waterfalls on the side of this mountain.
From the highlands to Black Sand Beach
We made our way to the iconic Reynisfjara Black Sand Beach. If you’ve ever been there, you know it’s breathtaking, but it’s also a place where Mother Nature reminds you who’s boss. As Sarah stepped out of the car in her stunning flowing maternity gown, the wind immediately made its presence known. Imagine a dramatic maternity dress with a large slit swirling around against the backdrop of black sands and basalt columns—sounds dreamy, right? Now imagine that same wind trying to wrestle the dress off Sarah as Micah scrambled to keep it under control. Cue laughter, hair flying in every direction, and a lot of “okay, just hold it for one more shot!” But honestly, those wild moments made the photos so much more real and full of life.
When I think back to the day, this black and white portrait of Micah kissing Sarah’s shoulder is the one that comes to my mind immediately over every other image from this day. This was unposed, unprompted, and unscripted. It was just Micah loving his wife and unborn baby.
Why It Was Worth It?
Sure, the day came with its challenges. The wind was fierce!! the temperatures weren’t exactly cozy, and we had to keep ducking into the car to warm up between locations due to the rain. But every single moment was worth it. Micah and Sarah’s love and excitement for this next chapter in their lives shone through in every photo. They were adventurous, joyful, and completely in the moment—and that’s what made the session so unforgettable.
Also, let’s not forget the incredible backdrops that Iceland provided. From the stark contrast of the black sand beach to the sheer power of Skogafoss, these images are as unique as the story they tell. It’s not every day you get to say, “Remember that time we took maternity pictures with a waterfall behind us?”
A Word of Advice for Adventurous Parents-to-Be
If you’re thinking about doing a maternity session in Iceland, here’s my advice: go for it, but be ready to embrace the chaos. Iceland is unpredictable, wild, and a little ridiculous, but that’s what makes it so special. Pack warm layers, bring a sense of humor, and trust that the adventure will be worth every shiver and gust of wind.
Micah and Sarah, thank you for trusting me to capture this incredible day. You two were absolute rockstars, and I love seeing the amazing parents you are!!
Here’s to your next big adventure—parenthood!
